Wakefield City Webcats Win Silverware
The Wakefield City Webcats secured the first ever Hope Cup with an outstanding victory against the FevNet Rovers. In the last meeting between the teams FevNet ran the Webcats close and the feeling before the game was that another close game would take place.
Those feelings were quickly removed when the Webcats class came scoring 4 tries in the first quarter, including two for debut lad Rory. The first quarter also saw the first ever “chill bin” for the Webcats Bruno ,who after several warnings for all the players from the ref, was sent to chill for throwing the tag away, another new rule for the upcoming league.
The second quarter again showed that the Webcats, who were able to field almost a complete 2nd team against teased the FevNet team with some damaging pace out wide and some good handling skills in the middle, made even better given the extreme wind. Rory finished his hat-trick and a small mistake while a player was in the chill bin helped FevNet score a simple try. The half finished 9 – 3 to the Webcats.
Bruno got his hat-trick early in the 3rd quarter but he was involved in the games turning point. A very debateable penalty was awarded to FevNet was incorrectly brining the ball back into the play led to the Webcats fuming. FevNet scored from the close range penalty. The Webcats were still fuming and resulted in Bruno being sent to the chill bin. More arguing from Bruno led to it being moved up to a sin bin and then sent off. There couldn’t be much argument about the sending off from the Webcats given the warnings that took place.
The sending off only increased the Webcats determination to win the game. From the sending off FevNet hardly touched the ball, and when they did it was only led to pressure from the defence forcing mistakes and they quickly lost all their structure. The 3rd quarter also saw Charlie go in for his first ever try in a non-tournament game, weaving through the defence and running from one side of the pitch to the other avoiding defenders to try the games best try. Smithy also used the quarter to wrap up his hat-trick, and quickly turned it into 5.
The last quarter saw the other player on debut, Callum score his first try for his new team, with a lovely step and dummy and just about outpace the cover defence to score. Wig also used his pace to bag two trys, despite only playing the one quarter. The Webcats scoring 14 tries to 3 in the second half.
It was a good result for the Webcats, and after the game team chairman, Leon was presented with the trophy from the cup’s sponsors, the Hope and Anchor Darts Team and Rory was announced as Man of the Match.
It should be added to the end that for each try a team conceded, the players of that team would donate 20p each to the chosen charity, this years being the Brennan Rooney fund. Along with the money raised at the tournament last year and this game both teams have helped raise over £100 for the fund and hopefully we’ll be able to help raise even more in the upcoming season.
