How did the idea of the League come about?
Several ways, the current tag scene comes from what is known as IMBRL (Inter Message Board Rugby League) where message boards represented their club they supported in tournaments and friendly matches. Different teams had aims in what they wanted to achieve, some clubs grew in to full contact teams, some wanted to develop tag and some stayed the same then folded sadly. Tag is now about everyone and anyone play rugby league, so at the end of the Wakefield and Featherstone District Tournament we held a meeting with the idea of the Tag Merit League with a similar concept to the Midland Merit League. The league has developed with the intention to encourage new clubs outside the older IMBRL circuit to play tag rugby league.

Who can play?
Tag because can be played by anyone and what is great for our version of the sport, both woman and men of near any age can play. Also near any skill level from novice to experienced. There are players who play tag because they may have a permanent injury preventing them playing full contact, or they want to retire from the full game, or even don’t want to play the full game. There also a number of players who play both tag and full contact because of the way tag is played it helps to develop certain ball skills that you can’t always develop in the full game.
